Hi, I’m Craig and I’m the Design Director in our Leeds studio, a northerner through and through.
My Hornall Anderson journey started just over 4 years ago when Kim said those special words ‘welcome aboard’. Ever since, time has literally flown by, working on such a varied range of projects and with such a great bunch of talented people - I’ve not stopped! Always willing to go that extra mile, there’s been one or two late nights along the way so I can really get under the skin of the project, but nothing a beer and a slice of pizza won’t fix.
It seems a relatively short 4 years that I’ve been part of the HA gang but there is a wealth of experience behind me, spreading over 18 years in fact (I know, I don’t look old enough, right!). Throughout those years I’ve worked across a vast range of disciplines and for some truly great clients but my real passion and strengths lie in packaging design. I still get that chuffed feeling from watching someone pick up one of my designs and take it home, knowing that my work is sat somewhere in thousands of homes - amazing!
I really enjoy the challenge of a project and putting my own stamp on it, from listening to the brief and soaking it all up to presenting a well thought through and crafted range of designs. I’m all about the detail, a bit of perfectionist and quite meticulous… but you’ll always find me at the start of a job at my desk with a big bunch of markers sketching away the beginnings of a great design.
Apparently I also make the best cuppas in the office, so if you fancy one of these legendary brews, pop in and we'll have a chat about your next big project.
I’m Nicola and I help look after Hornall Anderson’s New Business and Marketing. It can be a tough job but amazingly rewarding when we win a new piece of work and begin our journey with a new client. We never know what’s ahead and that’s what makes every day interesting, exciting, challenging, frustrating, exhausting, fun and never the same. It’s often a rollercoaster ride of emotions, late nights and early starts but working with our amazingly talented strategists and designers is what makes me want to come to work everyday.
Managing deadlines, developing relationships, dealing with tricky briefs and coming up with design solutions which make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up makes it all worth it. I’m a people person and life isn’t all about work, I’m genuinely interested in peoples lives, what they’ve had for tea and what their pets names are. I can keep a secret when I need to and that’s why I keep in touch with so many colleagues from previous agencies and clients who have become good friends.
I thrive on variety, ideas, seeking out opportunities and building strong and long lasting relationships. Together we achieve the unachievable, deliver amazing work and we do it without ego’s (well mainly) everyone’s opinion counts, our Northern grit and Southern charm is a powerful force and I get a buzz every time I see a piece of our work out there delivering a smile, a reappraisal, and most definitely a sale.
I was blown away by Sara from the moment I met her at her first interview, intelligent, professional, fun and cheeky she has all the right ingredients to cook up the best ever experience for our clients.
One of her most endearing qualities is the fact that she doesn’t know how good she is and is too modest to write about herself.
Her tenacity and inquisitive mind ensure that she questions and challenges briefs to really understand what is at the heart of the business problem. Our clients always benefit from her high standards and attention to detail.
The rest of our team love working with Sara because she’s all about the work and the team, she is extremely efficient and supportive, always ensuring that the guys have what they need to do the best job they can. Her cheeky sense of fun and great banter mean that working with Sara is always a great experience.
If Sara is managing your project, you are in very safe hands and can rest assured that you are going to get the best possible service delivered with a lovely smile and a sprinkling of fun!
My name is Kim and I’ve got a big job and a very grown up title, if you’re into that kind of thing. I’m the MD at Hornall Anderson UK
For me, the fun started over ten years ago when Hornall Anderson was the Core with a merry band of around half a dozen entrepreneurial people. My now dear friend Ali, the founder, asked me to join the gang. It was like jumping out of a plane and trying to sew the parachute on the way down! It was exhilarating and chaotic and I loved it! Within a year we were bursting at the seams and two more studios were born. I’ve laughed, coerced, counseled, cried, massaged egos, fought for what we believe in, hugged, celebrated, bit my tongue, rolled my sleeves up, rolled my eyes, stayed all night, bought the beers… and the resolve… bought the pizza, made the cake, won the work, lost the work, hired and said goodbye to some amazing people and watched with pride our young talent blossom and mature and then with even more pride watch those people generously share everything they have learnt with the new young talent.
It’s the people and their genius that make this place amazing and they’re what get’s me out of bed every morning.
12 years down the line I’m still here with the same amount of dedication, passion and pride, a few things have changed… we’re part of Omnicom and global opportunity is abound. Being part of a larger network opens up endless opportunities to work with other great people in our group. And… the world’s changed, how we live our lives, the big wide world is a much smaller place now, everything is instant and so much more visual… and so we’ve changed and adapted and learnt new skills to stay on top of our game.
But one thing that hasn’t changed is our amazing team, the amazing results they achieve and passion, from the old school, like me, who have been here since the early days to the newbies who bring a fresh perspective.
Mike has a few nicknames, Mike Muscles, Magic Mike, the Time Lord, some need no explanation!, the Time Lord is because he regularly has to chase us for our timesheets!... but none of them quite encapsulate what a great guy Mike is.
Mike is like Switzerland, he can always see every angle of a situation, he is thoughtful, pragmatic and considerate… a great listener and gives well rounded advice.
He’s also cheeky and fun and when he’s not playing rugby he enjoys a gin or two with his lovely wife and cuddles from their furry kitty baby, Bilbo... in fact he is the proud owner of a gin shelf at home which is busting at the seams with all the most delicious gin delights available.
All in all he’s the most unlikely Finance Director you’re ever going to meet. BUT don’t let that fool you, he’s an ace negotiator and spreadsheet wizard and keeps us all on our toes in terms everything finance related
We’d be lost without Amy, she keeps us on track and focused on the job in hand. Warm, friendly and fun, with great banter, Amy’s calm approach means she is the perfect person to keep the plates spinning in the busy studio, with priorities changing by the minute and a high spirited bunch of passionate individuals to manage, Amy is always smiling and thrives on a challenge. She is without a doubt the ‘go to’ person….hero….saviour and all time supporter when the pressure is on.
In all of the hustle and bustle Amy controls the world with her trusty spread sheets, and is the fountain of all knowledge scheduling work across 3 different studios simultaneously. Her lovely personality really comes into play working with all of the different teams making sure everyone has what they need, but her focus on the small details ensure that nothing slips through the net, meaning that work is delivered on time for each of our lovely clients.
You can guarantee Amy will be ‘on it like a car bonnet’ and you can guarantee spending time with Amy will be fun and you’ll be welcomed with a big smile.
You cannot…..however……guarantee that Amy will cook you up a storm in the kitchen. Oh well you can’t be good at everything Amy!
With over 20 years experience in the creative industry I've worked for clients such as Heineken International, BBC, Diageo, MolsonCoors, Jose Cuervo, Lucky Strike, Morrisons and World Duty Free Group over diverse disciplines ranging from magazines, books to instore POS and moving image.
My partner is Angela, she is my rock, always there to keep me in line and to top my glass up with red wine while looking after our two young sons and our grown up daughter.
If I have any spare time to myself, I'll be found creating graphic art in my garage studio which has stemmed from my love of graffiti, calligraphy and typography. I take commissions for bespoke artwork and also produce pieces for my own enjoyment. As well as having my work reproduced in various books I have also self published two graffiti books at my website laki139.com (shameless plug). I also follow the mighty Newcastle United so I’m quite an emotional person!
I look forward to applying my vast experience at Hornall Anderson - always thriving to push the boundaries of the clients expectations.
Despite being extremely articulate Jon asked for somebody else to write his bio… that’s the kind of humble person he is. I have worked with Jon for many years since he started his career in our Hull studio as a shy Junior Designer.
He’s had an interesting journey with HA, working and living in Hull, London and Seattle and this experience has helped him to grow into the very accomplished, quietly confident, Design Director he is today.
Jon’s a listener and a researcher, he gets right under the skin of the challenge at hand and takes in every aspect of insight available to ensure that his ideas are really well thought through, intelligent and unique. He’ll surprise you by taking a different creative angle and amazing you with something you didn’t expect to see in answer to your brief and it will always be executed to the highest possible standard.
A total foody, Jon has eaten in some of the world’s best restaurants and is always the person to ask for the best recommendation. This passion manifests itself in Jon’s design and art direction of food, you can always rely on Jon to deliver total food porn, using the most delicious food pairings, propping and lighting.
You’re in great hands when Jon is on your brief, believe me he’s going to knock it out of the park. With Jon it’s all about the work and the team, there’s no ego just a brilliantly talented, lovely person.
Both of our Grandads were loyal supporters of the Mighty THFC, a legacy that Jon and his Dad continue today.
Hiya! I’m Kate and I joined the HA team 5 months ago. I still consider myself a newbie to the north, after I sensibly relocated to Leeds from London, however I no longer feel like a newbie to the team who have welcomed me with open arms.
My story begins in London 10 years ago where I graduated University with a BA in Fashion Journalism. Since then I have worked with a number of leading creative, PR and media companies and with clients in the hospitality, retail and charity sectors.
I love looking after people & brands and my role at HA allows me to do both of these. I am curious by nature, I like to discover and learn and believe that no challenge is too huge or scary. I pride myself on my ability to remain calm except for perhaps after a few tequilas…
For me it is all about ideas – being part of a team that makes them live, breathe and work makes me so proud. I enjoy seeing effective design and design thinking applied to real life and business.
In my spare time I love travelling, languages and culture, and am fortunate to have family across the world. I have a penchant for good food and wine. I’m a keen runner and yogi and regularly participate in charity events. I’m always on the lookout for a good book. I love music festivals – especially the camping part!
Hi there I’m Steve - Cyclist, Northern Soul DJ, Trans Pennine traveller, beard wearer, chapati chef and eagle-eyed Artworker in the Leeds office.
It’s a truly inspiring experience working as part of such a talented and creative team who constantly deliver incredible results.
Working at Hornall Anderson has given me the opportunity to learn a wide range of design skills and I’m never happier than rolling up my sleeves and producing pixel perfect artwork.
Away from the office I enjoy cooking (especially Indian cuisine), collecting rare vinyl, trips to the seaside and taking out the bins.
Or Jow as he's know around here [I'll let you ask him why...] is a big ideas man, he'll surprise you with his creative solutions to your brief. Even when he first came into our Hull studio as a young graduate looking for his first job, he had an enviable portfolio full of ideas that oozed personality and wit.
His personal pride, Northern grit and determination ensure that he maintains the highest possible standards of creativity and finish. He sees every detail of every job through from start to finish, guaranteeing the best possible end result.
Always pushing the boundaries, he will challenge and suggest the latest technology and industry capabilities to keep our designs and clients a step ahead of the competition.
With a belly laugh we all love, you can always count on Jow to keep the banter flowing.
I’m Lisa and I look after our lovely clients up North… being a Leeds lass born and bread I’m proud to be flying the flag for HA in the north.
I joined the HA family 18 months ago and have been kept on my toes ever since, working on big and small projects but each with individual opportunities & challenges that I love to help solve for the client.
I’ve been lucky enough to work in the Design industry for the the last 14 years and still get a buzz from working with great brands that customers can really connect with.
As a people person I believe that the magic comes from the people that surround you, I feel really proud to be working with such a great bunch of creative and inspirational people on a daily basis.
I’m also a problem solver and “love it when a plan comes together’… (that always happens…honest!). Logical thinking, pragmatism and calmness are attributes that are hardwired into my personality, but I also love nothing more than to be swimming in a sea of inspiration… I’ve already lost half of my adult life to Pinterest and will continue to do so as long as there are amazing examples of design, architecture, illustration, art and delicious culinary masterpieces in the world!
Affectionately known as Gazza, I have had the pleasure of working with Gareth for over 10 years. Shy about his tremendous talent, I am writing this on his behalf. Design Director in our Hull studio, Gareth has learnt from the best and is incredibly skillful.
Gareth is a design machine, full of ideas and with the skills to execute them to the highest, most polished standard… and at a speed that would intimidate Usain Bolt!
With incredibly high standards, Gareth sets the bar high and has a meticulous eye for detail, checking and checking again to ensure that only the best work leaves his hands.
This quest for perfection translates into Gareth’s passion for photography and the precision with which he art directs and manages the post production work, often choosing to retouch all of the images himself to ensure the highest standard of aesthetic is achieved.
Patient and generous, Gareth has trained and shared his skills with many of our designers to guarantee that our team are the best they can be and fit for the future.
"Slim Jadey" is currently not so slim as she has just finished to go on maternity leave and we are all very excited awaiting the delivery of her baby boy, who has become affectionately known as "Teeny Berk".
While she's away we will miss her lovely, calm, cheeky personality. Her efficiency and professionalism are second to none, even with the most complex of projects, you can rely on Jade to never drop a ball and no matter how busy or under pressure she is, she always retains a swan like serenity.
So for now, we wish her all the best and can't for "Teeny Berk" cuddles.
Paul is the font of all knowledge when it comes to production, there is nothing he doesn’t know about print, artwork and repro. He is the backbone of our artwork team, with years of experience under his belt. We started working together over 10 years ago and over the years I have picked his brains on packaging innovations, print capabilities, substrates etc to ensure that we are always suggesting the most cutting edge solution for our clients.
A total perfectionist, Paul sets the highest possible standards and checks our work with a fiendish eye for detail.
One of the best things about Paul is his unwavering dedication to bringing to life the vision of our creatives, he doesn’t bring barriers, he brings solutions and suggestions to ensure we achieve the best possible results to showcase our design work… and he follows it through to the very end attending print passes all over the world.
A quieter character, Paul has a wicked, sense of humour, which keeps the banter flowing.
A’reet! I’m Aidan, I’m not really one for putting myself in the spotlight but here goes…
I studied Illustration at University and a year after finishing my degree I was offered the opportunity to work for The Core. So in 2007 I packed up and made the daunting move from Manchester to London where I stayed for 5 amazing years. Since then I’ve worked at the Leeds studio and pay the occasional visit to Hull whilst working from my new home in Lincoln.
I’m not entirely sure what my role at Hornall Anderson would be classed as… I’m a 3D Visualiser, Illustrator, Retoucher and Designer… essentially my job is to make images look nice.
I’m a real perfectionist and no matter what the job is I will put my all into it and strive to get the best results possible. I am constantly trying to learn new techniques to create increasingly complicated imagery in order to push the boundaries of what we can achieve at HA. I’ve spent more time learning Cinema 4D and various renderers in the last 9 years than I’d care to think about. I would never have thought that I would become the nerd that I am today!
Outside work I’m most likely to be found painting doors and skirting boards in my crumbling ancient house, making weird music buried in wires, gizmos and bizarre instruments or reading books on theoretical physics that are far beyond my level of comprehension.
Anyway that’s me!
Chris is an artist, pure and simple and in the office he certainly puts his enviable talents to good use. Whether that’s the creation of bespoke illustrations or producing complex and beautiful visuals on screen, Chris can be relied upon to add the final level of sparkle and class to everything he touches.
This magic touch translates to life outside the studio. Calling Chris a stylish dresser would be to do him a disservice, no outfit is left to chance and is always considered down to the finest detail. As a successful graffiti artist you might expect a spot or two of paint on the shoes but no, we just have his beautiful creations dotted all over the country to remind us of his formidable skill with a spray can.
Beyond paint and page, Chris is a lover of music. As well as being a member of Brit-Pop band Soda his passion for music is clear for all to see in his incredible vinyl collection. Chris is also a committed dad of two and we’re sure he’ll pass his passion for music on to them too – as well as his wickedly dry sense of humour! With that in mind we thought it might be best for us to write this for him, just in case…!
Working from the Hull studio Dom manages projects, product samples and photography schedules. She has built great relationships with a huge network of suppliers who are ALWAYS guaranteed a lovely warm welcome, a big smile and probably some funny stories too.
Dom has amazing organisational skills, people skills and will tackle any problem ahead. Without a doubt….Dom is central to making sure the creative team have everything they need to bring the 'magic to life’ .
Dom’s smile is just the thing to brighten up the studio on a cold, damp Monday morning and it’s impossible not to get caught up with Dom’s infectious giggle and wicked sense of humour.
Looking after the team in Hull Dom’s bright and cheery nature keeps the spirits high as well as keeping the fruit bowl, sweetie bowl, and fridge stocked high too.
Full of cheek and naughtiness, Mark is a great character in our Hull studio. He’s been here since the start working part time keeping our financial accounts in order. The rest of the time he can be found fighting fires as part of Blue Watch.
An outstanding Mr Fix It, Mark can be relied upon to get the studio ship shape and ready for action... and he's always the last man standing on one of our legendary HA parties!
Sharon came to the Hull studio over 2 years ago as a junior artworker, from then she has developed and grown to become an integral and respected part of the team.
Always ready to help with a smile no matter what the task, Sharon has an eye for the smallest details, therefore you can relax knowing that whichever projects she is part of, everything will be checked and checked again.
By nature, Sharon is one of the quieter people, but she can give as good as she gets when the banter starts.
If you’re lucky enough to be in the Hull studio one of Sharon’s cappuccinos is something to look forward to.
Gina or ‘Gina G’ as she gets called around the office is one of the young’uns among the HA gang and is one of our lovely designers in the Leeds studio.
After making the switch from Lancashire to Yorkshire around 2 years ago I can honestly say she has made me laugh out loud every single day with one of her hillarious stories. She’s definitely someone you want in your office!
Her love for typography and illustration really comes through and she’s also a massive blog fan, so definitely the girl to go to if you want to know what all the cool kids are up to or what the latest trends are.
